Something Fun

I rarely share links here, but every now and then I find something I like and want to share. So here is a link for your enjoyment.

Google Body by Google Labs http://bodybrowser.googlelabs.com

This one is fun.  It is an online anatomy guide by Google that show the forms in three dimensions. Its not really designed for artists, but it proves very useful in seeing how the muscles fit within the body. What I like is I can rotate the body and see the shapes of the muscles and bones from all sides.  I don't know how accurate it is but looks pretty good to me.

Mention

Hsuan-chi and I both have paintings in a juried exhibit in Santa Cruz right now. We were both mentioned in an brief article about the show. Ignore the fact that both our names are spelled wrong, we are quite used to that. It is still fun to get mentioned.

Exhibit

I had the pleasure of doing an exhibit with my father this month. The opening was last Friday and it was a lot of fun.  Having the show in the town I was raised in was fun and I was fortunate to see a lot of people I have seen in years. I also was able to meet many new faces from the area.  Though I would have to say the best part was working on something with my Dad.  Anyways, it was a lot of fun and if you are interested in more info about the show click here.

Traveling

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I have been traveling and visiting family and friends the last few weeks. Shannon and I went to Taiwan for a few weeks and needless to say I have not been painting recently.  I have my sketchbook with me and been doing some sketching here and there. Mostly I have just been enjoying my trip.  I will be back soon.

On an art related note, I did get a chance to to see the exhibit that Shannon and I each have a painting in. It is a show featuring and Chu Chen Ming and showcases several Academy of Art University alumni. It was exciting to see and I will post pictures once I get the chance to download them from Shannon's camera.

Fabric Study

Over the last couple of months I have been doing drawing exercises like the exercises I did  back  school.  To the left I is a charcoal drawing of a fabric sheet I hung on the wall at my house.

New Painting

Here is a new painting that I have just finished.  This one is a slight shift from what I have been doing recently.  In this painting, I wanted to set up something a little more direct that had a little more of an immediate impact.

I felt I  needed to work with a broader value range in the composition.  For a while now I have been flattening the value range to hide the figure a bit and help develop a sense of mystery around it. To be more direct, I thought I would open open the range and included more areas of increased the detail on this one.

Student Progress

I teach private drawing and painting lessons. I thought it might be fun to show a students progress.

To the left is the first project he did. It was the first assignment after the first lesson. This lesson is an introduction to the materials, and some basic drawing concepts. The exercise was to draw white object, such as a cup or a bowl, lit by a single light source.

The image to the right and below is a drawing exercise copying a portrait drawing.  This is the assignment we started on week 7 and finished on week 8. I am very pleased with the progress and excited to see more progress.

Two Year Anniversary For the Blog

February marks the two year anniversary of this blog.  I started this blog while I was in school working on a MFA in painting. My wife suggested I do that for my school journal, as a way to talk about the lessons I learned, the ideas I was working on, and the challenges in my work. I thought I would try it and found that I like blogging.  After graduating, I have mostly been using this as a venue for announcements and to show images of new work.

This next year I plan to do more of what I originally did when I started this and open up the range of content a bit more again. To me, this is more interesting than just image updates and announcements.

Thank you to all those who read and follow this blog.

The Figure Now 2010 Exhibition: Update

I previously wrote about my participation in the Figure Now 2010 Exhibition at the Fontbonne Fine Arts Gallery at Fontbonne University. (Click here to see previous post)

I didn't mention that the painting I entered into the exhibition was awarded 2nd place. I thought I'd wait for the gallery to announce it first. It is a nice honor to receive and I was excited to hear the news. If you are in the area check out the exhibit. If not take a look at the work in the exhibit by visiting this website.

Preparing the surface.

I have spent this last weekend getting new panels ready. I have been wanting to make panels that have the smooth surface that is similar in feel and look to the mylar I have been painting on. Through some experimentation and practice I was able to get the surface the way I like it.

When I say make panels, I don't build them any more. I enjoy making them, but find it takes me way too long to build them proper. It is just easier for me to hire someone who knows what they are doing make quality cradled panels for me. I have them custom made for me from someone in the East Bay. He does great work and I get nice quality cradled panels. All I do is prime the surface.

I use gesso as my ground. I lay down about four or five layers of gesso sanding between coats to build a nice base. Then using a squeegee I work over the surface until I get a nice smooth surface. This a long process but after it is done I pleased with the results and am ready to paint.
